DNS server lookup
When you're surfing the internet, your computer uses a DNS server to lookup the IP address for a domain name or URL that you enter in your browser. This process is called DNS name resolution, the DNS server resolves the domain name to the IP address of the website.
Thanks to DNS, you just have to remember the human-readable name of a website instead of it's full IP address. It's a bit like a phonebook; your computer knows which number to route your request to in order to reach the site you want to visit. It does this by querying a domain name server, also called a DNS server or name server. These servers are simple (but massive) databases that map names to IP addresses, and they are distributed all over the Internet.
